Moody’s believes that the economies of ASEAN member states have proven more resilient this year than expected, bolstered by increased investment and demand linked to artificial intelligence, which in turn boosts exports. However, the impact of this trend varies across countries, mainly benefiting those economies that are significantly integrated into global technology supply chains.

In addition to the momentum generated by artificial intelligence, the economies in ASEAN still face pressure from rising oil prices, U.S. tariffs, and weak domestic consumer demand. These factors may lead to widening disparities in growth rates among countries in the region.

According to the latest forecast, the ASEAN economy could grow by 4.8% this year and 4.6% next year. Moody’s indicates that this growth rate is further supported by rapid expansion in exports and investments in artificial intelligence.

While previous stockpiling measures aimed at mitigating anticipated tariffs are expected to return to normalcy, the investment demand for AI remains high, particularly in the data center sector and electronics exports. It is projected that the economies of most ASEAN countries will grow faster than initially anticipated in January.

Moody’s identifies the rapid development of artificial intelligence as a key factor enhancing the GDP forecast for the region. However, ASEAN economies still contend with heightened risks associated with U.S. import tariffs, which are expected to remain high until 2028 and may even continue to rise.

Overall, according to Moody’s assessment, a combination of technology investments, electronics exports, and AI-related demand provides ASEAN countries with a relatively solid foundation to respond to external shocks.
